Dental Hygienists

Dental hygienists have worked hard to become a respected and professional part of the dental team.  Following a number of years of study, they work alongside other dental professionals, delivering dental health care.

Some History

Beginning in the 1880’s, dental nurses provided treatments to improve oral health.  The dental nurse profession lead to training in scaling and polishing in 1906. That training gave birth to the name “dental hygienist.”

In 1910, the Ohio College of Dental Surgery offered the first courses for dental nurses.  However, out of fear and protectionism, the college canceled them.  None of the graduates were approved for practice.

In 1915, Connecticut passed regulations allowing “dental hygienists.”  Slowly, other States followed suit.  Eventually, the professional practice of “dental hygiene” became a part of regular dental practice.

Dental Hygienists play a significant and crucial role in the delivery of dental care.  Their specific range of practices and procedures are designed to specifically promote good oral health.  Cleaning and guidance provides specific plans that encourage patients and help control diseases affecting the mouth, gums and teeth.

The specific work licensed Dental Hygienists perform in most States consists of:

  • Administering Local Anesthesia
  • Dental X-Rays
  • Periodontal Charting
  • Scaling and Root Planing
  • Constructing Dental Implants
